A former city, a famous spring, two golf communities

Weeki Wachee is the one place in the county everyone outside it has heard of, because of the spring. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park sits on a first-magnitude spring at the headwaters of the Weeki Wachee River, averaging about 170 cubic feet per second, and the river runs about 7.5 miles from there to the Gulf. Newton Perry opened the attraction on October 13, 1947, and it became a state park in 2008. The park’s address is 6131 Commercial Way, which is US 19, and US 19, SR 50, and CR 550 all meet there.

The city of Weeki Wachee was created in 1966 to promote that attraction. It never had more than a handful of residents, and the legislation dissolving it was signed in June 2020. Weeki Wachee is unincorporated today, which matters for cart rules: any public-street designation would come from Hernando County, and we could not find one here. The only county-designated cart zone we found is in Hernando Beach.

The carts live in the communities. GlenLakes Country Club is a 1,400-acre community with a 24-hour manned gatehouse and an 18-hole Ron Garl course winding through it, open to buyers of all ages. The Heather is about 600 homes north of Cortez Boulevard, built around the Heather Golf Club, a 9-hole public course at 7406 St. Andrews Boulevard that formed in 1988. Both put private carts on private roads every day, and both are routine stops for us.

Inland or coastal: it changes the work

Weeki Wachee straddles the line between the Brooksville Ridge and the coast, and the cart wear follows the line.

Inland, along and east of US 19, the USDA soil survey maps excessively drained sand, and the climate story is heat and rain. NOAA’s Brooksville Chin Hill station averages 90.6°F highs in July and 88.8 days a year at 90°F or above, with 51.94 inches of annual rain, about 58 percent of it June through September. Heat evaporates water out of flooded batteries; a wet garage oxidizes terminals. GlenLakes and Heather carts get the same treatment as a Timber Pines cart: watering, terminal cleaning, and a load test every year.

West toward the coast, toward Hernando Beach and its canals open to the Gulf, salt does the work. Salt makes moisture conductive and speeds corrosion at every place two metals meet: battery posts, cable lugs, charge-port pins, brake hardware. Corroded connections add resistance, resistance mimics a dying pack, and owners end up shopping for $1,200 in batteries when the fix is a $100 cable service. Hurricane Helene in September 2024 pushed record water levels along the Nature Coast, with a 66 mph gust recorded at Weeki Wachee and at least 500 Hernando County homes suffering major damage, mostly surge along the immediate coast. What Weeki Wachee carts need

Daily drivers inside GlenLakes wear brakes and tires on a faster clock, and sand in the drums makes it faster still. Range that keeps shrinking is usually the pack but not always; the range dropping page lists the cheaper faults that produce the same complaint.
