Golf cart tire flat or dry rotted: repair or replace, and what it costs

A flat golf cart tire in Spring Hill is usually one of two things: a puncture that can be plugged, or a sidewall that has cracked from sun and heat and has to be replaced. Tires run $75 to $150 each installed at your home, $300 to $600 for a set of four, and the tech brings the common sizes on the truck. The sidewall crack version is the one that surprises owners, because the cart barely moves and the tires still fail.

Check this first (five minutes)

1. Find the leak. If the tire went flat overnight, look for a nail or screw in the tread. Soapy water on the tread and valve stem shows the bubble.
2. Read the sidewall. Fine cracks in the rubber, especially where the sidewall meets the tread, are dry rot. Run a fingernail across them. If they catch, the tire is done regardless of tread depth.
3. Check the valve stem. Cracked or leaking stems are a common slow leak and a cheap fix.
4. Check all four pressures. A cart that pulls or feels heavy is often just low on one side.
5. Look at the tread. Feathering on one edge or cupping means an alignment or bearing problem that will eat the new tire too.

Why Nature Coast tires crack

Sun and heat. Rubber ages by losing the oils that keep it flexible, and ultraviolet light and heat drive that process. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Brooksville Chin Hill station count 88.8 days a year at 90°F or above, with July and August highs averaging 90.6 and 90.4°F. A cart parked outside, or in an open carport where the afternoon sun reaches the tires, sits in the worst conditions for rubber there are. Tires on a cart that is driven every day inside Timber Pines wear out; tires on a cart that sits crack.

Sand. The USDA soil survey maps the Spring Hill area in the Candler-Tavares-Paola association, excessively drained fine sand throughout. Sand is abrasive and it wears tread on carts that run community paths and the edges of lawns. A cart that rides sand needs its tread looked at yearly, which is why tire inspection is part of our tune-up.

Storage pressure loss. A cart that sits through the summer loses tire pressure, the flat spot on the hot concrete deforms, and the bead can unseat. Safe tires are legal equipment. On any designated public street, F.S. 316.212(6) requires a golf cart to have safe tires alongside efficient brakes, reliable steering, a rearview mirror, and red reflectors front and rear. Hernando County’s Shoal Line Boulevard cart zone in Hernando Beach applies that list. A cracked sidewall is not a safe tire.

What a tire replacement includes

The wheel comes off, the old tire comes off the rim, the rim is checked for corrosion at the bead seat (a common leak source on carts that have lived near the coast at Hernando Beach), the new tire is mounted, balanced where the cart uses balanced wheels, inflated to spec, and the wheel goes back on torqued. While the wheel is off, the brake drum is right there, and doing brakes on the same visit costs less than a second trip.
